History of the Clans
Long before colonial contact, the ancestors of the Efik people organised themselves into distinct clans, each settling along different stretches of the Calabar and Cross Rivers.
Today, clan identity remains a vital part of Efik heritage, shaping family lineage and traditional titles.
Locations & Traditional Symbols
Each clan is historically tied to a settlement along the waterways of Calabar, and carries its own crest, colours and ceremonial symbols recognised throughout the Kingdom.
One Nation, Twelve Clans
Family records connecting the clans to the present-day Royal Houses are maintained by the Palace Secretariat.
